Predecessor events

The ideas behind starting the Metainformatics Symposia originated with the Structural Computing Workshops and Open Hypermedia Workshops, previously held in conjunction with the annual ACM Conference on Hypertext and Hypermedia. Although these were interesting fora for discussions, there seemed to be an increasing divergence between what many people wanted to accomplish at these meetings and what actually could be accomplished, given the constraints inherent in a subsidiary workshop format. It was felt that a new forum, independent of other meetings, was needed.

The Metainformatics Symposium 2002 was a successful event. We attracted researchers from a dozen different countries around the world to share ideas, exchange experiences, and build a common framework for the future MIS symposia. The proceedings of MIS '02 were published by Springer as volume 2641 of the Lecture Notes on Computer Science. The Metainformatics Symposium 2003 and Metainformatics Symposium 2004 built upon this success. The proceedings of MIS '03 were published by Springer as volume 3002 of the Lecture Notes on Computer Science. The proceedings of MIS '04 were published by Springer as volume 3511 of the Lecture Notes on Computer Science.

The Metainformatics Symposia are intended to continue to carry on the best aspects of these previous fora, combined with the advantages of a full-meeting format. We intend to keep the "workshop atmosphere" of the SC and early OHS meetings, with plenty of time for open discussion and debate, combined with a new four-day format to allow for genuine progress to be made on some of the pressing problems facing our field. We want to return to the original format of these predecessor events by restricting attendance to leading researchers actively engaged in the problems at hand. We hope we can recapture and improve upon the best aspects of the earlier OHS and SC meetings with this new format and focus.
